The closing ceremony of the 54th Army Athletics Championship was held on 5th October 2017 at Mahinda Rajapaksha Stadium, Diyagama. This mega event was held from 3rd to 5th October 2017 with the participation of all regiments in the Army. The Commander of the Army Lt Gen N U M M W Senanayake RWP RSP USP psc graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and many serving Senior Offrs witnessed the closing ceremony as the guests.
Concluding the Championship, Lance Corporal Wimalasiri DAGJP became the Best Sportsman of the year 2017 by exceptionally performing in his event Long Jump marking 8.13m that hit a new Army record breaking his own previous record of the event.
L/Cpl Wimalsiri DAGJP joined the Sri Lanka Army on 12th December 2010 and was posted to 3 SLSC. He is an old boy of Pallawa Central College Peradaniya where he was groomed into the sports of Long Jump and Triple Jump at the school level.
