'Brave Hearts' Project

The 'Brave Hearts' project was the brainchild of the former President and Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa and also the former Secretary of Defence, His Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces with the noble aim of looking after those injured War Heroes during the remainder of their lives. Most of those War Heroes valiantly defended the motherland but received critical injuries in the battlefield, compelling them to seek the physical assistance of someone else for sustenance of their lives. This concept was mooted and launched on 17th September 2009 by the former Commander of the Army, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.

The first project of this noble gesture with best of the facilities was implemented as the 'Abhimansala-1' in a 5- acre land, adjoining the banks of 'Nuwarawewa' in Anuradhapura on 26th July 2011, homing 52 differently able war heroes for the rest of their lives as their own respective homes find it difficult to manage their disability until the last breath of their lives. The Army Seva Vanitha Unit, conscious of the national obligation supported the construction of the 'Abhimansala II' at Kamburupitiya, Matara on 10th November 2012 in order to house 48 more permanently-injured War Heroes for the rest of their lives. The 'Brave Hearts' Project continued and inaugurated the 'Abhimansala III' at Pangolla, Ibbagamuwa on 25th April 2014 facilitating the stay of 52 more injured ones for the remainder of their lives.
