The Adjutant General Army Headquarters Major General B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu assumed duties as the 16th Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch on 04th August 2020 amidst religious observances at the office of the Regimental Centre the Gemunu Watch Kuruwita.
The day’s programme was commenced in accordance with military traditions, Maj Gen B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu was welcomed by the Centre Comdt of The Gemunu Watch and received the traditional guard turn out at the main entrance. Subsequently received the salute presented by Gemunu Watch troops at the parade square. The charming but the proud of dignified military parade was reviewed by the incoming Colonel of the Regiment, accompanied by the Parade Commander together with Centre Commandant in accordance with military traditions.
Thereafter, the planting of sapling was held at close to main entrance. Then Maj Gen B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu, placed his official signature and took over the responsibilities of the Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch followed by the all ranks tea organized at the Swimming Pool premises. After the commemoration of war heroes at the monument, Maj Gen B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu addressed all ranks at the parade square.
Maj Gen B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu is a proud product of the Bandaranayake Central College- Gampaha. He joined the Sri Lanka Army on 31 October 1985 with Intake 22 and was trained at Sri Lanka Military Academy- Diyatalawa. He was commissioned on 24 July 1986 and posted to 4th Battalion the Gemunu Watch.
He has held many comd appointments varying from Platoon Commander, Company Commander and Second in Command of 8th Battalion the Gemunu Watch and Commanded the of 6th Battalion the Gemunu Watch.
He has held many Comd, Staff and Instr appointments in various formations and Army headquarters. Some of the key appointments are Squadron Commander- KDA, Sector Comd- OCC, Offg Col GS- 22 Div, Offg Comd- 225 Bde, Comd- 572 Bde, Col GS- 22 Div, GSO 1- 61 Div, Col GS- 58 Div, Comd- 631 Bde, Comdt- CTS, Offg GOC-51 Div, Director- Youth Corps, Offg GOC- 23 Div, GOC- 14 Div, Adjutant General- AHQ.
Further, Maj Gen B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu has followed many training courses both local and abroad in his military career. Some of the important courses are Young Officer Course- India, Junior Command Course- India, Unit Command Course- Pakistan, Defence Oriantation Course- Netherland. He is a graduate from National Defence University, China.
Maj Gen B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu was decorated with Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) for his unblemished military career in the Army.
The Colonel of the Regiment’s beloved wife Mrs. Avanthi Abeynayake, the President of the Gemunu Watch Seva Vanitha Branch, family members, Senior Officers, Staff Officers at the Regimental Centre and other ranks of the Gemunu Watch were participated in extending their well wishes to the new Colonel of the Regiment.
