HIGHLANDERS WELCOMED HOME AFTER ADVENTURES DURING ASIAN ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIP

“A Road of Thousand Miles Begins With One Step” A British Statement “Your victory will never be endangered.” Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, Highlanders’ prescriptions for victory on the sports field keep on going generation to generation. The 22nd Asian Athletics Championship with the participation of all Asian Countries was held from 05 to 09 of June 2017 at Bhubaneswar in India and Sri Lankan Army Athletic Team were competed and the Highlander athletes was inaugurated to made one of the most convincing victories in Sri Lankan Army Athletic History who vied in the 4 x 400 relay event meanwhile recorded 3.04.80 performances and won the Silver Medal in the tournament. During the spectrum of the victory S/429324 Corporal HM Dilip Ruwan, S/429731 Corporal MGA Prema Kumara was head gear of the entire tournament and they were a proud product of the Gemunu Regiment which was endorsement to Sri Lankan Army Sports History. As an individual performance during the 22nd Asian athletics Championship, Dilip Ruwan got the 5 place and Prema Kumara could able to get the 8 place during 400m event and they gave their maximum support to the 4x400 meters relay which won the silver Medal for Sri Lanka. The name of these Highlanders is undoubtedly the Shining Stars in Sri Lankan Athletic History. Spectrum of victory out of their achievements the Army record, Dilip Ruwan became the most talented sportsman thus keeping an unforgettable name in the history of sports. In his proud career, He won 400 meters Bronze Medal 4x400 meters relay Silver Medal in 12th Asian Games 2016 and he could able to win 400 x 4 meters relay Gold Medal during Thailand Open Athletic Championship 2016. Prema Kumara won 400 meters Silver Medal 4x400 meters relay Silver Medal in 12th Asian Games 2016 and yet they are feeling thirsty of highlanders victory as well as did not stop at the parade of securing meddles. The Highlanders could able to achieved this successes with the guidance and the dedication of Col of the Regiment Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc and the Highlanders Athletic Coordinator , General Officer Commanding 22 Division Major General KPA Jayasekara WWV RSP USP ndc psc and the dedication of main coaches Maj Ranjith Hennayake and Colour Sergeant Marasinghe. A large gathering of representatives representing the Director General Army Sports and the Directorate of Army Sports were at the air port to welcome and congratulate those athletes and Ministry of Sports and National Olympic Committee supported the arrangement.
