This Bn was raised on 4th Sep 1996 at Thirunaweli – Jaffna and Major W Wimaladasa was the first commander of the battalion. later it was amalgamated with the 7 GW on 17th May 2005 and named 7 / 11 GW.
During the last stage of war between LTTE this Bn again formed at 1GW - Diyatalawa on 4th Oct 2007 and Battalion Day remain as 4th Sep . Present Col of the Regiment Maj Gen PUS VITHANAGE RSP ndu Commanded this Battalion during the period of 31 December 1996 to 10 July 1997.
Since its inception Battalion was involved actively in offensive operations where Five officers and one hundred and five other ranks made their supreme sacrifice on behalf of the motherland. Five hundred and fourty two got wounded in the action and two were missing in action.
