The Battalion was raised on 17th. September 1992 in Kondavil in the Jaffna Peninsula, during preparations by the Sri Lanka Army for a large scale offensive to liberate Jaffna from LTTE control. Brigadier K.S. Fernando was the first Commanding Officer. From its inception, the Battalion was intimately involved in combat operations to wrest control of areas dominated by the ruthless LTTE Terrorists. Other military tasks involved the restoration of normalcy during national emergencies, natural disasters and other calamities.
On 15th. September 2000, 11 GW was re-named 7 GW and amalgamated with 5 GW becoming 5 / 7 GW.
During the war waged to rid the Country of Tamil Militancy 7 Officers and 186 Other Ranks sacrificed their lives in combat.
3 Officers and 210 Other Ranks have been Wounded-in-Action. Some permanently.
