Major GGN Wijesooriya RSP USP psc assumed duties as the 18th Commanding Officer of 6th Battalion the Gemunu Watch on 03rd January 2024. A brief ceremony was held which included Guard Turnout, ceremonial parade, religious observances and troops address.
Major Nimal Wijesooriya was enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Sri Lanka Military Academy with Intake 54 on 19th July 2001. After completion of successful military training, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 20th December 2003 and he was posted to 8th Battalion the Gemunu Watch.
During his 23 years of military career he has held many Command and Staff appointments such as Platoon Commander and Officer Commanding of 8 GW, Battalion Adjutant and Officer Commanding of 12 GW. Further, he has held the appointments of GSO 2 (Ops) - SFHQ (MLT), GSO 2 (Ops/Trg) - RHQ GW, SO 2 Dte of Quality Assurance and Inspection, 2IC of 11 GW, and Adjutant of RHQ GW. Prior to the Commanding Officer he has held the appointment of SO 2 at Military Secretary Branch.
Moreover, for his bravery action in the battle field he was awarded with “Rana Sura Padakkama” and for his unblemished service he was awarded with “Utthama Seva Padakkama”. In addition he has been awarded with “East Humanitarian Operation Medal, “North Humanitarian Operation Medal”, “North and East Operation Medal, Long Service Medal”, “75th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal”, “Seva Abhimani Medal and service Medal”.
All Officers and Other Ranks of the Gemunu Watch extended their warm wishes to newly appointed Commanding Officer and wish him for a healthy, wealthy, peaceful and prosperous life.
