SRI LANKA ARMY AND THE GEMUNU WATCH HELPED VETERAN SPORTSMEN LT COL DESHABANDU (RETD) W WIMALADASA

The newly renovated Lt Col W Wimaladasa\'s house was declared open at the auspicious time by the Colonel of the Regiment Maj Gen PUS Vithanage RSP ndu on 31st May 2017. The name of Lt Col Desabandu (Retd) W Wimaladasa\'s is undoubtedly a shining star in Sri Lankan Athletic history. Out of his achievements the Army record he kept running 100 meters within 11.5 seconds is still remembered. In 1965 he became the most talented sportsman thus keeping an unforgettable name in the history of sports. In his proud career, he equaled the 200 meters Sri Lankan record, keeping the Sri Lanka record in 400 meters in 1968 and breaking his own record in 1972. He won 400 meters Silver Medal in 6th Asian Games, thus honoring the unit and the country as a whole. But yet he did not stop at the parade of securing meddles. He reached the zenith when he won the Gold Medal in Asian Games held in Tehran. He also gave his maximum support to the 4x400 meters relay which won the Gold Medal for Sri Lanka. Because of his feat Lt Col Wimaladasa was awarded both the Army Colours and National Colours. With the guidance and the dedication of Commander of the Army and Director of Sports, Director of Veterans Affairs the renovated work was carried out by the troops of Gemunu Watch, under the supervision of Colonel of the Regiment and Centre Commandant of the Gemunu Watch. Directorate of Veterans Affairs of Sri Lanka Army and The Gemunu Watch has spent more than 4.5 laks of rupees to renovate this house. A large gathering of Officers including Brig (Retd) HN Halangode RWP RSP USP USACGSC, Deputy Commandant of RHQ SLNG, Commanding Officer Ranaviru Apparel Alawwa and soldiers of the Gemunu Watch were there to congratulate him.
