NEW COLONEL OF THE REGIMENT ASSUMES DUTIES

The Security Forces commander , Security Force headquarters Mullattivu Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc assumed duties as the 13th Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch on 10 June 2017 amidst religious observances at the office of the Regimental Headquarter, The Gemunu Watch Kuruwita. The day’s programme commenced in accordance with military traditions, Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc received the Guard Turnout and was welcomed by Centre Commandant, Regimental Centre. Thereafter the Parade, presented by Gemunu Watch troops saluted Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc at the parade ground. The charming but the proud of dignified military parade was reviewed by the incoming Colonel of the Regiment, accompanied by the Parade Commander together with Centre Commandant in accordance with military traditions. Then, Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc, placed his official signature and took over the responsibilities of the Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch . Further, tree planning was held at conference hall premises followed by the all Rank tea organized at the auditorium. Afterward, Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc addressed all Commanding Officers under command to the Gemunu Watch and all officers attach to Regimental Centre. Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc is a proud product of the De Mazenod College Kandana. He joined the Sri Lanka Army on 27 th April 1983 with Intake 18 and was trained at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa and commissioned on 07th November 1984 and posted to 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch . Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc held many appointments varying from Platoon Commander, Company Commander and 2nd in Command, Commanding Officer of 8th Battalion the Gemunu Watch. He was a troop commander of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) ( formerly the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy ), and later he became the Commanding Officer of the KDU. He has held many staff appointments in Formations and Army headquarters. Some of the key appointments are; Brigade Major - 521 Bde, GSO II (Trg)- Dte of Trg, Colonel (General Staff) 55 Div, Commandant, Regimental Centre the Gemunu watch, Commander, Sub Area Commander (RPR), Director Sports, Director General Operation and Systems- OCDS and Director Psychological Operations. Further , Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc followed many training courses local and abroad in his military carrier. He graduated from Defence Service Command and Staff Collage ( formerly the Sri Lanka Army Command and Staff Collage ) and earrn degree of Sport Science and Management Course in Wellington , New Zealand. Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc was decorated with Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) for his exceptional unique performances ,valor and bravery that he displayed during operations and also a recipient of the Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) for his unblemished military career in the Army . He held many command appointments namely ; Commander 533 and 541 Brigades Commander 23, 65 and 54 Infantry Divisions. Major General WBDP Fernando RWP RSP USP psc is a well known sportsman and fitness promoter in the Army who represented Sri Lanka in Basketball and member of the National Olympic Committee. Also he represented numerous national sports bodies in Sri Lanka , and thus been ambassador in the capacity of Chief of Mission and Technical Advisor in South Asian Games Colombo in year 2005 and 2015 in Assam India. Presently he is the Chairman of Army Para Game Committee. The Colonel of the Regiment’s beloved Father, Mother, wife Mrs. Anusha Fernando, the President of the Gemunu Watch Seva Vanitha Branch, family members, GOC 22 Infantry Division Major General K P A Jayasekera WWV RSP USP ndc psc, many senior officers, Staff Officers at the Regimental Centre and other ranks of the Gemunu Regiment were participated in extending their well wishes to the New Colonel of the Regiment. “TARRY NOT FORWARD”
