FELICITATION CEREMONY FOR MAJOR GENERAL B V D P ABEYNAYAKE USP ndu

A felicitation ceremony for Major General B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu was held at the Regiment Centre on the occasion of his promotion to the rank of Major General. The traditional event unfolded on 04 January 2019 at Regimental Centre, Kuruwita with the participation of a large number of Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks.

Major General Chula Abeynayake was born on 11 December 1965 and completed his school education from Bandaranayake College Gampha.. Major General Chula Abeynayake joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 31 October 1985 to the Officer Cadet Intake 22. After successful completion of the basic military training, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant on 31 October 1985 and posted to 4th Battalion the Gemunu Watch. He has held many command appointments in unit line such as Platoon Commander, Company Commander and Second in Command. He Commanded 8th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch and had excelled his service during difficult time as a Commanding Officer in 6/8 GW.

During his tour of duty, he has achieved qualifications from both local and overseas and the few of foreign courses are mentioned bellow:  

  • Junior Command Course - India

  • Unit Command Course - Pakistan

  • Defence and Strategic Studies Course - China

Further, Major General Chula Abeynayake has immensely contributed to the Army with his proficiency in both Command and Staff aspects. He had proved himself as an icon of excellence by holding some of the key Command, Staff and Instructional appointments in his military career as mentioned below.


Command Appointments:

  • Commanding Officer - 8 GW

  • Sector Commander – OCC

  • Commander - 572 Brigade

  • Commander - 572 Brigade

  • Commander - 631 Brigade

  • GOC - 51 Division

  • GOC - 23 Division


Staff Appointments:

  • General Staff Officer 1 – 61 Division

  • Colonel General Staff – 22 and 58 Division

  • Director Plans – AHQ

  • Director Youth Corps


Instructional Appointments:

  • Troop Commander - Kotelawala Defence University

  • Commandant - Combat Training School, Ampara

Major General B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu presently holds the appointment of General Officer Commanding – 14 Division.

Centre Commandant, Brigadier K Prematillake RWP RSP welcomed the Chief Gust and invited to review the Guard turnout at the entrance and accompanied to receive the salute of the proud, dignified military parade. Then, the ceremonial commemoration for fallen war heroes at the monument was taken place to make the event more traditional.

All Officers and Other Ranks of the Regiment Centre extended their heartfelt gratitude to distinguished Senior Officer for his commitment and dedication to the Gemunu Watch and wished for a healthy, wealthy, peaceful and prosperous life.

Then the Chief Gust was accompanied to the lunch arranged at the Officers’ Mess. A special memento was presented to Major General B V D P Abeynayake USP ndu by Colonel of the Regiment, Major General KPA Jayasekera WWV RSP USP ndc psc – Commander, Security Forces East in appreciation of his dedicated and committed service rendered to the Regiment.
