Maj Gen Wajira Welagedara RSP USP is a proud product of Dharmaraja College- Kandy, and having successfully completed his primary and secondary education, he joined the Sri Lanka Army Regular Force in 1988. Thereafter, he underwent training with the Intake 29 at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa where he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant at the completion of basic military training and was posted to the 4th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch as a Platoon Commander. Subsequently, he served as the Company Commander of amalgamated 4/12 GW and also rendered his service as the 2IC of 7th Battalion of The Gemunu Watch.
He commanded the 8th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch at the peak of the Humanitarian Operation and displayed his great leadership which immensely contributed to eradicate the ruthless terrorism from the motherland. Presently, he is following the ndc course in Sri Lanka. During his long tour of duty, he has followed a number of courses both local and abroad. Furthermore, in appreciation of his bravery and dedicated service in the battle field as well as the exemplary service, he was awarded with Rana Sura Padakkama, Uttama Sewa Padakkama, Purnabhumi medal, North and East operation medal, Long services medal, Riviresa Campaign service medal, 50th Independence anniversary medal, Sri Lanka Army 50thAnniversary medal, North humanitarian Operation medal, East Humanitarian Operation medal, Sewabimani Padakkama and Seva Padakkama.
On his arrival at the Regimental Centre of ‘The Gemunu Watch’, the Centre Commandant, Brigadier WBJK Wimalaratne RWP RSP welcomed the senior officer and invited to review the Guard Turnout at the main entrance. Thereafter,he attended the ceremonial commemoration of the fallen war heroes held at the monument according to the customs and traditions of the Gemunu Watch. Subsequently, he was accompanied to receive the salute of the Gemunu Watch’s Guard of Honour. After having the all rank tea, a group photograph was taken including all the officers of the Gemunu Watch while making the event held on 3rd September 2022 at Regimental Centre The Gemunu Watch more traditional.
All officers and other ranks of the Regimental Centre extended their heartfelt gratitude to the distinguished senior officer for his commitment and dedication towards the Gemunu Watch and wished for a healthy, wealthy, peaceful and a prosperous life.
Then the Senior Officer was accompanied to the lunch arranged at the Officers’ Mess. Thereafter special memento was presented to Maj Gen SWB Welagedara RSP USP by the Colonel of the Regiment, Major General AC Lamahewa WWV RWP RSP – The Director General Infantry in appreciation of his dedicated and committed service rendered to the Regiment.
