CELEBRATION OF TRADITION: THE 44TH COLOUR BLESSING CEREMONY OF THE GEMUNU WATCH

The 44th Colour Blessing Ceremony of The Gemunu Watch took place on 15 August 2024 at the sacred sites of Kiriwehera Katharagama, Ashta Pala Bodhiya, and Kataragama Dewalaya, honoring the proud heritage and dedication of the regiment. This auspicious event was held under the esteemed patronage of the Maha Sanga and Colonel of the Regiment, Major General SWB Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc.

A historical note marks this date, as on August 15, 1980, Colours were awarded to the 1st Battalion of The Gemunu Watch (1 GW) along with its two Volunteer Battalions for their exemplary and loyal service to the nation. This notable honor was bestowed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and then-President of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Hon. J.R. Jayawardena, during a vibrant parade at the Galle Esplanade, which was meticulously commanded by Lt Col P. Pakshaweera.

With the Maha Sanga chanting Seth Pirith, auspicious blessings were invoked for the colors, enhancing the spiritual significance of the ceremony. The celebrations continued with an almsgiving in the morning hours of August 16, 2024, and marking the conclusion of this significant event with underscoring the deep-rooted traditions of The Gemunu Watch.

This ceremony celebrates the regiment's rich history, and further fortifies the bonds of unity and loyalty among the Highlanders, ensuring that the spirit of service endures for generations to come.
