The Battalion was raised on 24th. January 1994 at the Regimental Centre in Kuruwita. Personnel from Battalions of the Gemunu Watch such as 1 GW, 4 GW,5GW, 6 GW, 7 GW and 8 GW were posted to the new Battalion.
Brigadier R. N. Akmeemana became the first Commanding Officer of 9 GW. The Battalion was involved in Offensive Operations against Tamil Militancy since its inception. From time to time whenever the need arose the Battalion was involved in operations planned to restore normalcy and law and order during national calamities and emergencies.
On the 15th. of September 2000, this Battalion was amalgamated with the 1st. Battalion of the Gemunu Watch and was re-named 1 / 9 GW.
A total of 15 Officers and 441 Other Ranks have been Killed-in-Action.
17 Officers and 317 Other Ranks have been Wounded-in-Action.
9 TH. BATTALION OF THE GEMUNU WATCH [ NEW]
The Battalion was raised on 24th. June 2002 at the Regimental Centre in Kuruwita. Major A.K.C. Perera was the first Commanding Officer of 9 GW [new Battalion].
From its inception this Battalion was fully involved in Combat Operations conducted against the LTTE, the Humanitarian Operations conducted during the 2007 – 2009 period and operations conducted to restore normalcy in the Island after devastating natural calamities and national emergencies.
