4 th Battalion the Gemunu Watch

The 4th. Battalion of the Gemunu Watch, a Regular Force Battalion, was raised on 27th. December 1985 in Gemunu “B” Camp in Diyatalawa. The first Commandeing Officer was the late Major General. C.L. Algama. On 20th. May 1986 the Battalion was re-located at Paradise Camp in Kuruwita, in the Rathnapura District.

Since the day this Battalion was raised it has been deployed on combat operational tasks to eradicate JVP Insurgency and Tamil Militancy. In between, during brokered Ceasefires and a Cessation of Hostilities, the Unit has performed duties in connection with the maintenance of Essential Services to the Polity during Strikes and breaks down in the local Administration, during natural disasters in tasks to restore normalcy and in re-settlement and reconstruction activities.

On 12th. June 2000, 4 GW was amalgamated with 12 GW and was re-named 4 / 12 Gemunu Watch. Two years later the Battalions were restored to their original status and recommenced working as independent Battalions.

During the long drawn out war against Tamil Militancy, 14 Officers and 261 Other Ranks of 4 GW made the supreme sacrifice to safeguard the Unity, Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity of the Nation.

38 Officers and 961 Other Ranks were Wounded-in-Action.

18 Other Ranks have been permanently disabled.
