Mayors Exchange Views with Head, NOCPCO

A special discussion that got underway with a group of Mayors at the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) at Rajagiriya this afternoon (11) sought possibilities for further improvement of co-ordination of vaccination programmes that are now in progress.

The meeting was headed by General Shavendra Silva, Head of the NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Dr. S. Mahendra Arnold, Deputy Director General of Health Services, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Chief Epidemiologist and the Member of Parliament Hon Madura Vithanage.

Head, NOCPCO reviewed the current situation and presented a comprehensive account of daily positive cases, imposition of travel restrictions, increase in deaths, three types of vaccines available, functional vaccination mechanism, surge of positive cases in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts, registration of more patients, Army-nominated District Coordination Officers and their role, new improvisations of ICCs with more than 17,000 beds, procedures, related to capacity-building and overall immunization project, etc.

During this discussion, Mayors voiced their concerns and suggested various improvements to the existing mechanisms to the Head, NOCPCO who in turn promised to take up their issues for resolution with relevant higher authorities. They also suggested certain coordinating practices which they deem necessary. Dr Sudath Samaraweera, Chief Epidemiologist also contributed to the session.
