Army to Improvise 50 Bed Building for Isolation of COVID-19 Patients

Hon Minister of Health Mrs Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Director General Health Services Dr Anil Jasinha, together with several officials Thursday (26) evening inspected the government-owned former Voice of America buildings at Iranawila, Chilaw which could be improvised to serve as isolation wards for COVID-19 patients.

The building, hitherto remains unused could accommodate 50 beds for those needed to be isolated on medical grounds while being kept in quarantine. On the instructions of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, troops of the 1 Corps of Engineer Services (CES) under close supervision of Lieutenant Colonel Asiri Muhandiramge have undertaken the task of improvising and preparing the entire building within 5 days to suit the emergency purpose.

During the inspection, possibilities with regard to allocation of locations for sanitary, cooking facilities, etc were also evaluated and discussed with relevant authorities present at the location.

Senior Army and Police Officers, Provincial Council and Town Council authorities were among others who were present at the location.
