Urgent arrangements have been now made by Kandy-based 11 Division HQ in close consultation with Health authorities and District Secretariat to convert the Youth Centre at Gampola into an Intermediate Care Centre (ICC), in addition to already functional, Mahaweli National College of Education at Polgolla and Teachers’ College of Aesthetic Education, Giragama Intermediate Care Centres (ICCs).
The General Officer Commanding, 11 Division, Major General Kithsiri Liyanage after a proper evaluation of the developments as regards transmission of COVID-19 virus in the District with Brigadier Rohitha Rathnayake, Commander 111 Brigade agreed to expand ICC facilities for infected patients before developments turn worse.
At the moment, 111 Brigade troops are maintaining both Polgolla and Giragama ICCs in close coordination with health authorities in Kandy. The proposed Gampola Youth Centre ICC, to be administered by 111 Brigade troops are to be provided security by 2 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment troops. This new ICC can house 120 infected ones in the event of an emergency rush. Gampola ICC is to become operational within next couple of hours, according to the 11 Division.
