Election Commission Seeks Coordination of NOCPCO Head, acting IGP & DG Health for Smooth Conduct of Polls

A meeting that took place this afternoon (6) at the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) at Rajagiriya between the Commissioner General of Elections, Mr Mahinda Deshapriya, its Members and Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Head of the NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Dr Anil Jasinghe, Director General of Health Services, Mr Chandana Wickremaratne, acting Inspector General of Police and a few more officials explored coordination of voting possibilities for those in quarantine or hospitals under treatment.

The meeting focused on coordination and facilitation of those in compulsory quarantine at government-run Quarantine Centres, those in house/self-quarantine and those COVID-19 patients receiving treatment in hospitals to vote at the General Election and how such requirements could be coordinated through the Tri services, Police and Health administrators for the smooth conduct of the forthcoming General Election – 2020. Election Commission in turn thanked Head of NOCPCO, Director General of Health Services and all stakeholders for their dedicated work to contain the spread of the virus and highlighted the importance of continued sustained efforts.

At the same meeting, all stakeholders briefed the Election Commission on the status quo and the need to stick to sustained health guidelines, prescribed by Health authorities for prevention from COVID-19. It also discussed the measures that could be adopted in the event of any emergency or recurrence of the threat.
