The Army after undertaking the task of converting the famous Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre in Colombo to serve as an ICC completed the project and formally handed it over to health authorities on Thursday (17).
On the instructions of Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa, General Officer Commanding, 14 Division troops converted it into an Intermediate Care Centre (ICC) to treat COVID- 19 patients in the event of any emergency after an increase of the victims. Troops of 14 Vijayabhahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) under command to 142 Brigade with Health authorities threw their weight behind realization of the project and made it available to authorities.
General Shavendra Silva, Head, NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, the brainchild behind enhancing of the bed capacity and ICCs in line with the sudden increase of infected ones around the county, instructed Major General Vikum Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces – West to take prompt action for the conversion of this centre for an ICC within a few days.
This new converted ICC can accommodate 300 patients and is equipped with all medical facilities.
Brigadier Nilantha Fernando, Commander, 142 Brigade and Major E.M.M.S.K Ekanayake, Commanding Officer 14 VIR closely supervised the troops until the completion of the task.
