Heavy monsoon rains on 26 November 2025 triggered severe flooding in the Outpatient Department (OPD) area of the Base Hospital, Nedunkerni, resulting in nearly two feet of standing water. In response to this urgent situation, troops of the 16th Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (16 SLSR) swiftly intervened to safeguard the hospital and ensure the continuity of essential medical services.
Acting on the directives of the Commander, Security Forces – Wanni, Major General K M P S B Kulathunga RSP ndc psc, and under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding, 56 Infantry Division, Major General S A U A Solangaarachchi RSP ndc psc, as well as the supervision of the Commander, 561 Infantry Brigade, a rapid response team was promptly deployed to the hospital premises.
Under the close supervision of the Commanding Officer, 16 SLSR, a team comprising 2 x 20 troops constructed a sturdy sandbag barrier to prevent additional floodwater from entering the OPD building. Despite adverse weather conditions, the soldiers worked tirelessly to halt further water inflow and secure vulnerable areas of the hospital, ensuring uninterrupted access to medical care for the local community.
