56 INFANTRY DIVISION EMPOWERS 150 FAMILIES IN NEDUNKERNI AND PALINAGAR

The 56 Infantry Division recently spearheaded a community up liftment initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods of low-income families in the Nedunkerni and Palinagar areas with the distribution of baby chicks, vegetable plants and farming tools to 150 families on 19 November 2024. This impactful project, organized with resource assistance from the Sri Lanka Hadabima Authority.

This initiative was conceptualized by Brigadier M P M N Muthumala USP psc, General Officer Commanding of the 56 Infantry Division, and implemented under the guidance of Brigadier B D Fernando USP Hdmc psc, Commander of the 561 Infantry Brigade. Two separate programs were held to ensure maximum outreach.

The 10th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry organized the event at its battalion headquarters in Palinagar under the supervision of Lieutenant Colonel K A K Hewapathage RWP RSP USP benefiting 75 families. The 16th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Singha Regiment hosted the event at the Grama Niladhari Office in Nedunkerni North, under the supervision of Major W H Wickramasingha RSP USP psc lsc benefiting 75 families.

The events were graced by Brigadier M P M N Muthumala USP psc, who participated as the Chief Guest, reiterating the Army's dedication to fostering community well-being and development. The initiative reflects the Army's commitment to supporting vulnerable communities by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and empowering families to achieve self-reliance.

Through these efforts, the 561 Infantry Brigade and its under-command battalions continue to enhance the livelihoods of rural communities, embodying the values of service, resilience, and community development that the Sri Lanka Army stands for.
