THE GEMUNU WATCH PAYS FINAL TRIBUTE TO CORPORAL NANAYAKKARA FOLLOWING TRAGIC ROAD ACCIDENT

The Gemunu Watch bade a solemn farewell to one of its devoted soldiers, S/430451 Corporal Nanayakkara A R B L, who tragically lost his life in a fatal road accident that occurred in the Meegoda area on 31 May 2026.

The unfortunate accident claimed seven lives, including Corporal Nanayakkara, his beloved wife Mrs. P G N N Perera, her mother, and a female cousin. The sudden tragedy has left family members, friends, military colleagues, and the local community deeply saddened.

The final rites of the late Corporal Nanayakkara were conducted with full military honours at the Apalapitiya Public Cemetery on 03 June 2026 at 1600 hrs. The funeral ceremony reflected the highest traditions of military respect and gratitude for his dedicated service to the nation and the Regiment.

The funeral was attended by the General Officer Commanding 14 Infantry Division and Colonel of the Regiment, the Gemunu Watch, Major General K M V Kodituwakku ndu, and the Centre Commandant the Regimental Centre, the Gemunu Watch, Brigadier W G I S Gamage USP. A large gathering of senior officers, officers, other ranks, relatives, friends, and residents of the area also joined to pay their final respects.

As a mark of honour and appreciation for his dedicated service, military funeral honours were accorded to the late Corporal Nanayakkara. The ceremony was conducted with dignity and solemnity, symbolizing the Regiment's enduring respect for a fallen comrade.

The Gemunu Watch extends its deepest sympathies to the bereaved family members and prays for the eternal repose of the departed souls. Their memory will remain forever cherished by the Gemunu Watch and all those who knew them.
