6TH BATTALION THE GEMUNU WATCH EXTENDS CRITICAL HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE TO FLOOD-AFFECTED FAMILIES IN MULLAITIVU

On 28 and 29 November 2025, Severe adverse weather conditions experienced across the Mullaitivu District resulted in widespread flooding, causing major disruption to civilian life. Among the worst-affected areas was Wasantapuram Village, which was inundated after the spill gates of the Muthuaiyankaddu Kulam Reservoir were opened, triggered by continuous heavy rainfall and rising water levels.

Responding swiftly to the emergency, troops of the 6th Battalion, the Gemunu Watch launched a vital humanitarian assistance mission aimed at safeguarding residents and preventing potential loss of life. Acting under the instructions of the Commander, 593 Infantry Brigade, and the supervision and guidance of the Commanding Officer, 6 Gemunu Watch, two dedicated teams comprising 02 × 27 troops were deployed to the affected areas.

Through rapid, coordinated, and well-organised action, the troops successfully evacuated 573 civilians from 186 families who had been trapped by the sudden and dangerous flooding. Despite challenging conditions such as strong water currents, limited access routes, and unpredictable weather, the troops carried out evacuation, transportation, and immediate relief support with exceptional professionalism.

Priority was given to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals requiring medical attention. All evacuated families were safely relocated to the Mannakandal Government Tamil School, where they received shelter and essential support.

The humanitarian operation conducted by 6th Battalion the Gemunu Watch once again highlights the Gemunu Watch and Sri Lanka Army's unwavering commitment to protecting and assisting communities during natural disasters. Their timely intervention, courage, and dedication ensured the safety and well-being of hundreds of civilians in a time of urgent need.
