The military funeral of the late Brigadier WVS Botejue (Retd) RWP RSP psc, a highly respected senior officer of the Gemunu Watch, was held with full military honours at the General Cemetery, Borella, on 27 November 2025. The solemn ceremony paid tribute to his distinguished service, unwavering commitment, and exemplary contribution to the Sri Lanka Army.
In accordance with military customs and traditions, troops received the remains near the cemetery entrance and paid their respects before placing the coffin on a gun carriage adorned with the National Flag. The funeral procession then advanced towards the crematorium. At the main entrance, a representative group of senior officers formally received the coffin and escorted it with dignity, accompanied by the late officer’s family members, officers, and mourners.
As part of the formal military proceedings, the Special Part I Order issued by the Adjutant General of the Sri Lanka Army was ceremonially read out to the gathering, honouring the late Brigadier’s devoted military career and service to the nation. Upholding time-honoured tradition, troops rendered a salute to the late officer and performed a symbolic gun salute - the highest ceremonial honour accorded to a fallen officer.
Following the Last Post bugle call, symbolising that the esteemed soldier had marched to his final rest, the remains were respectfully transferred to the crematorium for the final rites.
In keeping with military protocol, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, presented the bereaved family with the decorations and medals earned by the late Brigadier WVS Botejue during his distinguished service. This symbolic gesture reflected the Army’s deep appreciation of his dedication and loyalty to the Regiment and the nation.
The funeral was attended by Colonel of the Regiment, the Gemunu Watch Major General AMA Abeywardana WWV RWP RSP ndc, and many senior officers from the Gemunu Watch, with an amalgamation of retired senior officers and officers.
Moreover, Major General YABM Yahampath RWP RSP ndu psc, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, Major General KVNP Premaratne RSP USP nps psc, Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Directors, Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks, family members, and mourners who gathered to pay their final respects.
