FAREWELL CEREMONY FOR OUT GOING COLONEL OF THE MAJOR GENERAL SWB WELAGEDARA RSP VSV USP ndc ACCORDED MILITARY SALUTE

A farewell ceremony was held on November 17, 2024, at the Regiment Centre to honor Major General Wajira Welagedara following his retirement after over 36 years of dedicated service in the Sri Lanka Army.

Major General Welagedara began his journey in the Sri Lanka Army as an officer cadet of Intake 29, enlisting on February 22, 1988, and was commissioned on December 16, 1989. His first posting was with the 4th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch, where he exhibited exemplary leadership and commitment throughout his distinguished career, taking on numerous command and staff positions.

The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome from Centre Commandant Brigadier HCL Galappathti RSP USP. The event featured an impressive review of the Guard turnout at the main entrance and a formal salute during a ceremonial parade at the parade square. Honoring the sacrifices the fallen heroes, Major General Welagedara participated in a ceremonial commemoration at the monument dedicated to fallen war heroes.

To commemorate this significant milestone, a group photograph was taken, followed by a tea party at the swimming pool premises. The day concluded with a farewell dinner held at the Officer's Mess, where incoming Colonel of the Regiment, Major General WBJK Wimalartne RWP RSP, accompanied the guests.

The incoming colonel of the Regiment Major General Janaka Wimalartne delivered a heartfelt farewell speech on behalf of all Officers of the Gemunu Watch, expressing deep gratitude and appreciation for Major General Welagedara's service. He highlighted significant achievements and milestones throughout Major General Welagedara’s career, sharing cherished memories. The speech also extended best wishes to Mrs. Manori Welagedara, the respectful spouse of Major General Welagedara.

As a symbol of appreciation, a special retirement gift and a photo album were presented to Major General Wajira Welagedara by the incoming Colonel of the Regiment, recognizing his unwavering dedication to the Gemunu Watch.

All officers and ranks of the Regiment expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Major General Welagedara for his commitment and dedication to the Gemunu Watch, wishing him a healthy, wealthy, peaceful, and prosperous life in his retirement.

The ceremony marked the end of an era for the Gemunu Watch while celebrating the enduring legacy of Major General Wajira Welagedara’s service to the Sri Lanka Army.
