REMEMBERING OF TALENTED ATHLETE AND A DEDICATED MILITARY OFFICER LATE LIEUTENANT COLONEL EAG JAYASIRI USP (O/60195)

Lt Col E A G Jayasiri USP GW, an accomplished athlete, passed away on 13 May 2023.

Late Lt Col E A G Jayasiri USP GW (O/60195) was born on 18th October 1949 to Mr: Wiliam Silva and Mrs: Prema Edirisinghe in Bogamuwa village, Kurunagala. He has completed his primary and secondary education from K/Bogamuwa Central College and he was a good athlete who had many great achievements in his School tenure. After completing his education, he joined the Sri Lanka Army as a recruit on 7th March 1969. After he successfully completed the basic recruit course No. 41 at the Diyatalawa Recruit Training Centre and joined the 1st Battalion of the Gemunu watch. Later he was commissioned as a Lieutenant on 2nd October 1985 with Intake SSC (OR).

An accomplished athlete, he has won the 1st place in the 800m event in the Army Inter Regiment Athletic Meet for several years, and has also won the 800m and 1500m events at the national level. He also set a new record by finishing the 800m event in 1 minute 54 seconds in the Defense Services Athletic Meet in year 1975, and was a member of the team that set a new Sri Lankan record in the 800 m X 4 relay in year 1976. In addition, this officer obtained the Army Colors and the National Colors in the same year. Furthermore, this senior officer, has held number of appointments in the Regt as well as in the Army.

Whilst in retirement this officer passed away at the age of 74 years and his funeral was held at Koonpola public cemetery on 15 May 2023 with full military honors. A large number of Officers including Col of the Regt, retired officers and the soldiers of the regiment attended the funeral ceremony.
