Historic Bungalow of the Gemunu Watch Reopens Following Renovation

A historic bungalow, originally constructed by the British War Office during the Second Boer War (1899-1902), has been officially renovated and reopened as a holiday retreat for officers of the Gemunu Watch. This significant structure has long served military personnel and their families, bearing witness to the trials and tribulations of both World War I and World War II.

Following Sri Lanka’s independence, the bungalow transitioned from British ownership to become part of the Sri Lanka Navy, where it was designated as Navy Camp Rangala. Eventually, the property was handed over to the Sri Lanka Army.

In 1962, the establishment of the 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch marked a new chapter for the bungalow, which was repurposed as married quarters for the battalion's officers. Recognizing its cultural and historical importance, military leaders initiated plans to convert the residence into a holiday retreat that would honor its military legacy while enhancing the quality of life for serving officers.

The renovation project was executed under the vigilant supervision of Major A.M.N. Wijeratne RWP RSP, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch. The initiative also received strategic direction from Major General S.W.B. Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc, Director General Infantry and Colonel of the Regiment the Gemunu Watch.

The newly renovated bungalow was officially inaugurated on September 8, 2024, with a ceremony that celebrated its rich heritage and highlighted its future role as a space for rest and rejuvenation for all officers of the regiment.

The reopening of this historic bungalow not only preserves its legacy but also reinforces the commitment of the Gemunu Watch to provide holistic support to its officers, fostering camaraderie and well-being within the ranks.

As this storied structure welcomes its first guests, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the military and a symbol of the rich history that continues to shape the Gemunu Watch.
