A farewell ceremony was held on 19 October 2025 at the Regimental Centre of the Gemunu Watch to honour Major General WBJKWimalaratne RWP RSP, upon his retirement following over 35 years of exemplary and dedicated service to the Sri Lanka Army.
Major General Wimalaratne began his illustrious military career as an Officer Cadet of PMA Intake 2, enlisting on 07 September 1990, and was commissioned on 13 March 1991. His first appointment was with the 4th Battalion, the Gemunu Watch, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to duty. Over the years, he held numerous command and staff appointments, leaving an indelible mark on every position he served and earning profound respect across the Regiment and the broader Army community.
The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome extended by the Centre Commandant, Brigadier KMNDikkumbura RSP, followed by a review of the Guard Turnout at the Regimental entrance. As part of the day’s proceedings, Major General Wimalaratne paid solemn tribute at the Monument of Fallen Heroes, honouring the supreme sacrifices of those who laid down their lives in service to the nation. Subsequently, he was accorded a ceremonial parade at the Regimental Parade Square, reflecting the deep appreciation and respect of all ranks of the Gemunu Watch.
To commemorate this significant milestone, a group photograph was taken, followed by a tea party at the Regimental swimming pool premises. The day’s formal proceedings culminated in a farewell dinner held at the Officers’ Mess, graced by the presence of the incoming Colonel of the Regiment, Major General AMAAbeyawardana WWV RWP RSP ndc, along with a distinguished gathering of officers.
During the occasion, Major General AjithAbeyawardana, as the incoming Colonel of the Regiment, delivered a heartfelt farewell address on behalf of all officers of the Gemunu Watch. He expressed sincere gratitude for Major General Wimalaratne’s remarkable service, highlighting his leadership, dedication, and numerous achievements throughout his career. He also extended warm wishes to Dr. (Mrs.) Dilrukshi Wimalaratne, acknowledging her unwavering support and contribution to the Major General’s journey.
As a token of appreciation, a special retirement gift and a commemorative photo album were presented to Major General Wimalaratne by the incoming Colonel of the Regiment, symbolising the Regiment’s deep respect and enduring gratitude for his years of loyal service and steadfast leadership.
On 20 October 2025, the officers and other ranks of the Regiment paid a final tribute in a street-line farewell, extending their heartfelt respect as Major General Wimalaratne departed from the Regimental Centre — a poignant moment marking the conclusion of his active military tenure.
All officers and ranks of the Gemunu Watch joined in conveying their heartfelt gratitude and best wishes to Major General Janaka Wimalaratne for his unwavering commitment, leadership, and devotion to the Regiment. They wished him and his family a healthy, peaceful, and fulfilling life in retirement.
The ceremony not only marked the end of an era but also celebrated the enduring legacy of Major General JanakaWimalaratne’s distinguished service — a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of officers and soldiers of the Gemunu Watch and the Sri Lanka Army.
