ARMY HIGHLANDERS CLINCH INTER REGIMENT FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP-2024

In a nail-biting showdown at Army Inter Regiment Football Championship – 2024, Highlanders of Gemunu Watch (GW) emerged victorious and lifted the champions trophy outclassing the Gajaba Regiment (GR) team. The high-octane summit clash between two teams was kicked off at Beddagana National Football Complex on 10 July 2024 captivating a wholehearted soccer loving crowd.

The championship which featured all regiments competing for the coveted trophy, showcased the talent and camaraderie among army football teams during the group phase. The final match between GW and GR was a display of skill, determination, and sportsmanship that blended intensity and excitement.

A distinguished gathering of military officials and football enthusiasts, including Quarter Master General and Colonel of the Regiment SLLI Major General GMN Perera RWP RSP USP ndc, Director General Infantry and Colonel of the Regiment Gemunu Watch Major General SWB Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc, and Major General Upul Kodithuwakku, Chairman of the Army Football Committee, graced the event to witness the thrilling finale.

The GW team showcased exceptional teamwork and resilience throughout the match, eventually securing a thrilling victory over their opponents with a final score of 6-5 after penalties. The spirited performance of the players drew thunderous applause from the spectators as they celebrated their triumph. Following the conclusion of the championship match, trophies and certificates were awarded to the victorious GW team amidst much fanfare. Additionally, awards were presented for the Best Player of the tournament, Best Player of the Match, and the Best Goalkeeper, recognizing individual excellence and contributions to the competition.

The football league celebrated the spirit of sportsmanship cum competition, and highlighted the potential and talent of maturing footballers within the army ranks likewise. The event has not only fostered a sense of camaraderie among the regiments but has also set a high standard for future generations of military footballers to aspire to.
