8TH BATTALION THE GEMUNU WATCH TROOPS RESCUE PREGNANT WOMAN TRAPPED BY FLOODWATERS IN KANCHANAMOTAI

On 27 November 2025 Troops of the 8th Battalion, the Gemunu Watch carried out a swift and timely rescue operation, saving a 25-year-old pregnant woman, S. Sivajodi, who had been trapped inside her home as floodwaters rose to nearly four feet around the premises.

Acting upon information received from the GramaNiladhari of the Marathodai GN Division, an01 × 08 rescue team was immediately deployed to the location using a military truck. The operation, conducted between 1145 hrsto 1310 hrs, and it was executed under challenging flood conditions, ensuring the safety and well-being of the victim.

Following the successful rescue, the woman was transported to the Divisional Hospital, Nedunkerny, for urgent medical attention. She was later transferred to the Teaching Hospital, Vavuniya, for further treatment.

The prompt action and professionalism demonstrated by the troops of the 8th Battalion, the Gemunu Watch, were instrumental in safeguarding two lives amid severe flooding in the area, reaffirming the Army’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and rapid disaster response.
