14 (V) BATTALION THE GEMUNU WATCH TROOPS INTERVENE TO RESTORE THE MUTHIYANKATTU TANK SPILLWAY FOLLOWING CYCLONE DITVA

Cyclone Ditva caused severe flooding in several areas under the Oddusudan Divisional Secretariat, leading to significant disruption across eight GN divisions. Among the affected infrastructure was the Muthiyankattu Kulam tank in the Muthiyankattu GN Division. Damage to the tank posed an immediate and serious threat to approximately 1,800 families whose primary livelihood depends on agriculture.

Due to the risk of a spillway breach at the Muthiyankattu Kulam reservoir caused by heavy rainfall, approximately 7,500 sandbags were deployed over a period of two days to reinforce the embankment. As a result of this timely intervention, the reservoir was successfully secured, preventing a potential disaster and safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of nearly 1,800 families.

On 18 December 2025, Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc Commander of Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), visited the 14 (V) Battalion The Gemunu Watch area to express his appreciation for the troops’ efforts. During the visit, he also conducted an inspection of the Muthiyankattu Kulam reservoir.
